Queensland Coastal Adventures

Queensland Coastal Adventures

If getting up before sunrise isn’t usually your thing, you might want to consider making an exception just once for this amazing Queensland gem.

Located around 45km north of Mackay, Cape Hillsborough Beach, also known as Casuarina Beach, is famous not only for its spectacular rainbow-hued sunrises, but for its local troop of beach-going Eastern Grey Kangaroos and Wallabies.

Every morning they make their way down to the water's edge (they feed on seaweed and mangrove pods washed up in the overnight tide) and no exaggeration - The sight of these beautiful creatures hopping along the sand, backlit against a soft orange sky, is enough to make you hold your breath in awe.

Depending on the time of year, you’ll probably wind up sharing the beach with at least a handful of fellow travellers and photographers wanting to witness the sight for themselves. But to us that didn’t really matter. It’s an experience that could only be described as pure and utter magic.

HOT TIP: Check the web for sunrise times as you want to ensure you arrive by first light. Pack a camera and if you’re caffeine addicts like us, a thermos of coffee and wear a warm outer layer - it can get chilly on the beach!

Be sure not to rush off with the rest of the tourists once the sun has fully risen and the Roos have made their way back into the bush:

This is THE best time to explore the rest of this amazing spot, most likely getting the beach all to yourself. And it is well worth exploring.

With its pine-covered peaks and windswept shore, Cape Hillsborough could easily pass for a postcard from the US’s Pacific Northwest rather than tropical QLD.

Take your time and wander along the water's edge, soak up the morning light. Go rock hopping, have fun spotting fish in the rock pools.

And when you’re all adventured out, there’s nothing better than heading back to your accommodation (or van in our case!) and tucking into a hearty breakfast.

Adorable wildlife and stunning scenery - we can’t think of a better way to start the day.
